Crusty Proto is a peculiar unfinished dimwit born in 1997 and dumped on a garage CD sale. It has all the Jawaism to call itself a Resident Evil-ish game: poor controls, beautiful haunting half-baked atmosphere, and all. Such is all of its charm for want of realization: stumbling upon a lost gem of gaming history that never got to shine.
Created during ShroomJam 2024, the whole project is a passion-laden collaboration amongst 3DI70R (coding, modeling, and animation) and Tihan (music, ideas, QA), with all assets generated for and during the jam.

Crusty Proto is one intriguing "what-if" kind of thing: a game clearly plucked from the late-'90s hype surrounding Resident Evil but snatched away before picking up speed. It is a concrete example of the situation indie devs found themselves in before this digital era. That it got dug out after so many years and polished up for the game jam adds another layer to its enigma. Who knows what would have happened if it had gone through back then?
Crusty Proto is a must for anyone fond of gaming oddities. It's short and strange, laden with some unintentional comedy truly marking a moment where ambition met roadblocks. Then again, its retro look and eerie aura set the tone for a cult curiosity worthy of being visited.
