What Is The Fireplace (Beta)?

The Fireplace (Beta) is a diva of a little survival-horror game made in Scratch, whereby the player assumes the very unusual role of a pumpkin masker seeking to keep warm—and alive. The aim is to gather fallen wood while avoiding the threat of a big black scarecrow. It blends straightforward gameplay mechanics with an atmosphere of gloom and menace for some lighthearted bites of horror.

How to Play

Movement: Pretty much movement is by keyboard controls using arrow keys or WASD.
Gather Wood: Click on the door to go outside and gather wood. Then return inside by walking back to the door.
Survive: Click on the fireplace to keep the fire burning. Once the fire burns out…well, they will be chilling and scary.
Avoid the Scarecrow: Once caught by the scarecrow, game set! Stay sharp and keep moving.

Tips & Tricks

Fire Is Priority: Keeping the fire alive never ends! Just balance your trips out to gather wood with keeping the flames alive.
Get Auditory Cues: Horror games live and die by their sounds-if the scarecrow makes some noise, maybe it's nearby!
Calm Down: Panicking will make you mess up. Plan your route ahead and try not to stay out for too long.

History

It's a passion project by a new horror game developer learning the ropes in Scratch. He's experimenting with simple but quite effective horror mechanisms, and any feedback or ideas to improve on the scare factor from as well as others would be welcomed. It's a work in progress, so expect updates and improvements!
