What is Vessels?
Is there a game with a chilling title? Indie horrors like Vessels immerse players into an ever-growing flight-or-rescue mission. Being an extreme constriction in design, only ten days went into the making of this masterpiece. It sports a sole character, has a confined environment, and limited sound effects. This peculiar route of game creation builds a hyper-immersive experience that can keep one hooked till the very end.
How to Play
The whole rescue operation happens in eerie dim underground tunnels of a malfunctioning facility. Your job is to locate a missing co-worker who has been missing for 72 hours. The power is out, and the place is desolate, with heavy tension in the air. You will interact with a control console to manage lights and doors, solve puzzles, operate doors by entering codes, and make decisions to avert danger. A wicked twist unravels as you follow the story: the missing coworker is far from who they seem.
Tips & Tricks
- Watch the Lighting: Use the control panel methodically to turn on lights, as some places might be too dark and dangerous to go into.
- Audio Is Your Friend: The sound effects are few and far between, so just listen closely, as every faint sound could be warning you of impending danger.
- Plan Ahead: Certain puzzles are the steps-one-at-time kind. Do not be too quick with your decisions—think carefully about your moves.
- Prepare for the Unpredictable: The story will soon derail unexpectedly. So stay alert and be receptive.
History
Vessels, created under extreme constraints, could be rated as a sort of experiment on pushing the limits of what a horror can achieve in an extremely limited amount of time. Its minimalistic approach to design and feel-driven atmosphere put it in stalwart recognition in the indie horror scene, heralded for evoking dread and suspense where one would usually have to rely on flashy graphics or mind-numbing loudness.
