What Is FrostFallen Decay?
FrostFallen Decay is a point-and-click retro horror game with a nostalgic-yet-unsettling atmosphere. It was created under tremendous time constraints: just five days of building for Shroom Jam 2024. This short atmospheric experience is a mixture of meta storytelling and eerie psychological horror. Drawing inspiration from classic horror titles such as The House Abandoned, John Carpenter's The Thing, and to some minor extent, Silent Hill, this game toys with your expectations, starting simply like a retro journey and then swiftly morphing into something deeply terrifying.
How To Play
- Click objects to interact with them.
- Use Tab to cycle through items in your inventory.
- Hit F to maximize your visual pleasure (Unity compression can be a drawback to the pixelated art).
Tips & Tricks
- Pay attention—the meta narrative is tucked away in little visual and audio cues.
- Experiment with items—it's not always obvious how or if an item can be used.
- Enjoy the glitches—they only serve to enhance the uneasy atmosphere.
History and Inspirations
Conceived as a passion project for Shroom Jam 2024, FrostFallen Decay wears its inspirations on its sleeve. The developer had been reaching to embody:
- The meta horror of The House Abandoned (e.g., questioning the game itself).
- The paranoid tension of The Thing (think isolation and creeping dread).
- The psychological unease of Silent Hill and Frontiers of the Mind.
In spite of the short development period, the game manages to deliver a punchy and memorable vintage horror experience.
Note: The worn "8-bit" cassette sticker and the feeling that "something’s off" are all part of the experience. Lean into the discomfort.
